The HackRF could be considered as the wireless Swiss army knife known as "software-defined radios." Like any software-defined radio, the HackRF can shift between different frequencies as easily as a computer switches between applications.
It can both read and transmit signals from 100 megahertz to 6 gigahertz, including frequencies as low as the range used by FM radio up to the gigahertz frequencies used by Wifi or experimental wireless protocols.
Pretty much any wireless device that you can think of would be in the frequency range covered by HackRF. Just from observing a signal over the air, you can reverse engineer it completely to figure out the information transmitted over the network, and potentially inject your own transmissions onto that network.
All of that can be done with one HackRF device and a laptop, no wireless signal would remain secure just by virtue of using a unique, unfamiliar frequency. Tools like HackRF mean wireless communications will need to evolve beyond the "security through obscurity" model of protecting communications that has long been considered outmoded in the wired computing world.
This HackRF comes with TCXO module which is a must if you plan to do GPS/GSM captures. The built-in clock of the HackRF is not accurate enough to lock on those frequencies. This upgrade can lock into these frequencies better especially on GPS replays.
A preconfigured virtual machine is provided to download with all the tools installed to get the best out of the HackRF/PortaPack. A fully configured Ubuntu operating installed with HackRF drivers which includes GNU Radio, GQRX, Universal Radio Hacker and other tools have been installed all ready to go. Within the OS you will also have firmware files to reflash official & third party firmware.
